Baby Formula Water Prep Guide

Safe water selection and preparation for infant formula

How to Use This

How to Use This: Follow the numbered prep steps each time you make a bottle. Use the water source table to choose the safest option for your situation. Keep the supply checklist on your fridge for quick reference.

Before You Start

First: check your local water quality at ewg.org/tapwater. If your water tests clean, filtered tap water is fine for formula. If it has lead, nitrates, or high fluoride, use a reverse osmosis filter or bottled nursery water.

Safe Formula Prep Steps

  1. 1Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water
  2. 2Run cold tap water for 30 seconds before collecting (flushes lead from pipes)

Water Sources for Formula

Water SourceSafe?Considerations
Filtered tap (carbon block)GoodRemoves chlorine and lead; does not remove fluoride
Filtered tap (RO)BestRemoves fluoride, lead, chlorine, pesticides. Add trace minerals.
Unfiltered tapCautionMay contain fluoride, lead, chloramine. Check local water report.
Well waterTest firstMust test for bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, and lead annually
Bottled (spring)OKInconsistent quality; check for fluoride content on label
Bottled (purified/RO)GoodLow contaminant levels; lacks minerals
DistilledGoodVery pure; lacks minerals. Fine for formula since formula contains minerals.
Nursery waterCheck labelSome brands ADD fluoride. Read labels carefully.

Important

Infants under 6 months are especially vulnerable to fluoride. The ADA recommends using low-fluoride water for formula when possible. Excess fluoride exposure during tooth development causes dental fluorosis.

Formula Prep Supply Checklist

Water filter (RO or quality carbon block preferred)
Electric kettle with temperature control
Glass bottles (avoid polycarbonate plastic)Look for borosilicate glass or PP/PPSU plastic
Bottle brush and drying rack
Trace mineral drops (if using RO or distilled water)
Thermometer for spot-checking water temp
Your local water quality reportRequest from your water utility or check EWG Tap Water Database

Never microwave formula — it creates hot spots. Warm bottles by placing in a bowl of warm water for 2-3 minutes.

Important

If your baby shows signs of formula intolerance (excessive fussiness, blood in stool, persistent vomiting, or poor weight gain), consult your pediatrician before switching formula types. Some symptoms require medical evaluation.

Budget Tip

Budget tip: A quality faucet-mount carbon filter ($20-40) removes chlorine and lead from tap water and is sufficient for most families. You don't need an RO system unless your water report shows fluoride or specific contaminants.

Next Steps

Next Steps: Review the Water Filter Comparison Chart to choose the best filter for your home. As your baby grows, the Gut-Immune Connection Food Guide will help you plan their transition to solid foods.
